Determination—An Important Mindset Every Artist Must Have

You and I have our creative dreams, our desires, our passions. Some of us were lucky to be born with an artistic talent. Some of us found our calling later in life. Either way, there’s something we are meant to do with ourselves, with our one shot at life.

Believe me, you wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t have that something inside you, bustling to break free—a talent, a perspective, a story.

The very fact that you’re reading these words means that you have creative energy—whatever shape or form or colour that creativity may come in.

Only you know what you’re meant to do in life. Only I know what I’m meant to do. We each have our little patch of grass to water and fertilize with care and tenderness, to defend with all our grit.

Now, if we want to live out our calling, our truth, there’s one mindset that’s indispensible: deep, unwavering determination.

Determination in the face of obstacles, in the face of failure, in the face of poverty, in the face of loneliness.

Determination so firm and unyielding that there’s just no way the universe—or anyone in it—can deny us our dreams. Sure, we could fail; our dreams might not be realized. But we won’t drift into the night quietly. We won’t go down without a dogfight.

Sacrifice, pain, and resiliency

To conquer our mission in life, we have to be willing to sacrifice our time, our beloved hobbies. We have to be willing to endure pain, rejection, defeat. We have to be willing to tie up our boots and strap on our gloves after a string of failures. We need a fighter’s sprit. Will Smith describes this spirit beautifully:

Greatness is not this wonderful, esoteric, elusive, god-like feature that only the special among us will ever taste. It’s something that truly exists in all of us. It’s very simple. This is what I believe, and I’m willing to die for it. Period.

If we are somehow, someway, going to reach for and grab our calling by the neck and create our life’s work, then we need determination.

Skill, talent, opportunities, industry relationships—all these can be developed on the go.

Before we even start the journey, though, let’s make sure we’re determined.

So determined, that we’re ready to lay down our broken bodies in the way of any entity, any force that dares to march over us and douse our dreams.

Because with determination, any foe or fear can be destroyed; and any vision or purpose can be achieved.

Godspeed,
Aaron.
